Should You Choose a VFFS Machine or a Premade Pouch Packing Machine?

When customers begin a packaging project, they often ask which machine is faster. It is a fair question, but it is rarely the best place to start.

A fast machine will not solve the problem if the bag format does not suit the product, the powder does not feed smoothly, or the final package does not look right on the shelf. The more useful first question is this: Should you make bags from roll film, or fill finished pouches?

That is the practical difference between a vertical form fill seal machine (VFFS) and a premade pouch packing machine. Both can fill and seal automatically. Neither is automatically better. They are built for different packaging plans.

What does a VFFS machine do?

A VFFS machine forms a bag from a roll of film, fills it with product and seals it in one continuous process. It is common for pillow bags, sachets, snack packs, seeds, granules and powder products.

For a product with one stable bag format, this can be a simple and efficient workflow. The packaging material arrives as film roll, and the machine creates each bag during production. VFFS is often a strong option when the final package is a straightforward film-based bag.

The bag design still needs to be discussed early. A VFFS machine is selected around a bag range. Major format changes may require adjustment or extra forming parts, especially for brands with many sizes or frequent design changes.

When does a premade pouch machine make more sense?

With a premade pouch machine, the bags are finished before they arrive at the factory. The machine picks up each pouch, opens it, fills it, seals it and sends it out.

This route is often preferred when the pouch is a central part of the product presentation: stand-up pouches, zipper pouches, side-gusset bags, flat-bottom bags, bags with a valve, or other retail-focused formats.

Coffee is a good example. A roaster may want a flat-bottom bag, a zipper for re-closing and a valve for fresh roasted beans. In this case, it normally makes more sense to choose the pouch first, then select equipment that can handle it.

An empty pouch sample is more useful than a catalogue photo. Material, thickness, zipper, gusset shape and sealing area all affect the setup.

The bagging machine is only one part of the line

What happens before the product reaches the bag is just as important. Free-flowing beans, seeds or candy may use a linear weigher or multihead weigher. Fine powder may need an auger filler. Capsules and tablets may need a counting system.

We sometimes see projects where the bag style is correct, but the real issue is feeding. The pouch opens properly and the seal temperature is fine, yet the product does not drop consistently. That affects fill accuracy, production rhythm and sometimes the seal itself.

Before deciding, compare four practical points:

  1. Final bag style: a simple film bag, or a finished pouch with a zipper, gusset or flat bottom?
  2. Product behavior: does it flow freely, create dust, stick together, break easily or need counting?
  3. Required flexibility: one long-running product is different from several bag sizes and frequent changeovers.
  4. Total packaging cost: include film or finished bags, labour, storage, changeover time, waste and product loss—not only the machine price.

Do not overlook sealing

Sealing looks simple in a video, but small details matter. The pouch needs enough clean space above the product. Powder in the seal area, static, an overfilled pouch or an uneven bag top can all affect the result.

For products that need a longer shelf life, vacuum or nitrogen flushing may also be considered. For coffee, the right choice depends on the product condition, bag style and whether the bag has a valve. It should be selected for the real product, not added automatically because it sounds more advanced.

The best way to decide

Before choosing either route, prepare the real product, empty bags or film, target fill weight, expected output and local electrical details. Add any requirement for printing, labeling, vacuum or gas flushing.

A sample test answers questions that a specification sheet cannot: Does the bag open consistently? Does the product flow well? Is the weight stable? Does the seal remain clean after running?

VFFS is often a good route for standard film-based bags. Premade pouch equipment is often the better route when bag design and shelf appearance are central to the product. The right choice starts with the real product and the real bag—not a generic speed number.
